Scott Ross, M.D. - Assistant Professor, MSU Department of Family Medicine

Scott Ross, M.D., completed his residency training at The Toledo Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in Toledo, Ohio, after graduating from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan. He joined MidMichigan Physicians Group, Family Medicine located in Midland, Michigan in 2009 and then moved on to the Midland Family Medicine Residency Program as a faculty in June 2013. Beginning in 2010, Dr. Ross began volunteer precepting for the Family Practice Center to work more closely with the residents.

Dr. Ross completed extra coursework in Sports Medicine during his residency training as well as developing a procedure curriculum to allow him to learn vasectomies. He is especially interested in sports medicine, procedural medicine, and health informatics.

During his free time, Dr. Ross spends time with his wife, Jamie, and his three children. He also enjoys reading, hiking, rafting and traveling along with being an avid Michigan State University Spartans fan. GO GREEN!!

Shannon Bowen, M.D. - MSU Department of Pediatrics and Human Development

Shannon Bowen, M.D., attended Grand Valley State University for her undergraduate degree, and then attended medical school at MSU CHM in Grand Rapids. She finished her pediatric residency training in her hometown at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. She moved to Midland in 2019 after completing her pediatric residency and joined the MyMichigan Medical Group. She now works pediatrics in the clinic as well as rounding in the newborn nursery and on the pediatric unit. During residency, she also became a certified lactation counselor and has a special place in her heart for breastfeeding support.

In her free time, Dr. Bowen is a photographer and wedding officiant. She also enjoys spending time up north, camping, ice fishing, and exploring new cities with her family, which includes her husband Cody, her 3 year old daughter Charlie, and a second daughter, Piper due in April!

Kristin Busch, M.D. - MSU Department of Surgery

Kristin Busch, MD is a colon and rectal surgeon at MyMichigan Health in Midland, She is an alumnus of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and a graduate of the Rural Physician Program in the Upper Peninsula Regional Campus. She completed her general surgery residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine and her colon and rectal surgery fellowship at St. Mark’s Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is a Michigan native and enjoys a variety of outdoor activities year-round with her family.

Atul Kapoor, M.D. - MSU Department of Medicine

Dr. Kapoor practices Hospital Medicine at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is the Chief Hospitalist at the Medical Center. He completed medical school training from Manipal University, India and residency training in Internal Medicine from Crozer Chester Medical Center, affiliated with Temple University, Philadelphia. He also has experience in the field of wound care as well as in-patient rehabilitation. He is Chief of Infection Control Committee, and is involved in various quality improvement projects. He likes teaching and is actively involved in teaching medical students and residents. He is currently the Internal Medicine Clerkship Director for MyMichigan Health System. He has experience of providing support and mentorship to students to help them cope up with the stress and challenges in life. His other interests include yoga and meditation.

Natalie L. Kroll, D.O. - MSU Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology

Dr. Kroll practices with MyMichigan Physicians Group Obstetrics/Gynecology. She is a graduate of Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, East Lansing, Mich., and completed a residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Genesys Regional Medical Center, Grand Blanc, Mich.

Kerry L. Pierce, M.D. - MSU Department of Psychiatry

Dr. Pierce is a psychiatrist with MyMichigan Physicians Group in Midland. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, La., where he also completed a residency in psychiatry. Board certified in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry, Dr. Pierce has been in practice since 1992.

Akintayo Sokunbi, M.D. - MSU Department of Medicine

Akintayo Sokunbi, M.D., graduated from the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun state Nigeria in 1998 with M.B.CH.B. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University in 2008, fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in 2014. Since then, he has been practicing Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland. Dr. Sokunbi is passionate about medical education and teaching. He was a clinical instructor in pathology at the St. George's Medical School Grenada, chief resident in internal medicine after completion of residency and has been involved in the education of both residents and medical students. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. He is a member of the American College of Chest Physician, American Thoracic Society and member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

David Buzanoski, M.D. - Community Assistant Dean

Dr. Buzanoski was born and raised on a family-owned apple orchard in rural central Maine. Much of his formative years were spent picking & selling apples, jugging cider, and pruning trees. His father and brother still own and operate the farm to this day.

Dr. Buzanoski earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 2011. He trained in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula at the Marquette Campus. He was a recipient of the Gold Humanism Award and earned a certificate in the Rural Physician Program. Subsequently, he completed a combined residency at Maine Medical Center in 2016 where he served as the Pediatrics Chief Resident and the Internal Medicine/Pediatric Chief Resident. 

Dr. Buzanoski is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and has been an engaged physician at MyMichigan Health. He has served on numerous committees at MyMichigan Health and is currently serving on the Pediatric Steering Committee and the Ambulatory Quality Workgroup. 

Dr. Buzanoski has also been an engaged faculty and a Clinical Assistant Professor for MSU-CHM since 2017. He has mentored many students over the years, and was nominated and received the Outstanding Community Faculty award for the Midland Regional Campus in 2022. In addition, Dr. Buzanoski has served as the Campus Facilitator for the Rural Community Health Program (R-CHP). 

Dr. Buzanoski and his wife Dr. Kristin Busch have two young boys, Benjamin and Oliver. They enjoy the outdoors and many activities in the region, including Midland’s City Forest and the Rail Trail. He is a sports fan and follows soccer and basketball and is also a die-hard Red Sox fan.

Julie Coe - Director of Student Programs

Julie completed her M.A. in Communication and Digital Media from Saginaw Valley State University and her B.A in Psychology. She studied and lived abroad in Mexico for nearly five years.

Julie has built and led numerous teams in higher education over the last twenty years. The favorite aspect of her positions has always been working with students and her staff. She strives to provide an engaging, challenging, and dynamic learning culture for students as they work through academic, professional, and personal challenges. She is also an advocate for her staff to develop professionally and promotes a creative and innovative culture.

Outside of work, Julie enjoys being active with her son. Together, they have adventures, travel, visit family and friends, and enjoy being in the moment. She indulges in photography, gardening, mindfulness techniques, and exploring eastern philosophies. Julie also appreciates a good sense of humor!

Brandi Borchardt - Community Clerkship Assistant

Brandi earned her B.A.A. in Health Administration at Central Michigan University and double minored in Leadership and Management.

She spent her time at CMU being very involved in her sorority as Director of Philanthropy and as President in the Collegiate Health Administration Preparatory Society, a student organization on campus. Outside of work, Brandi enjoys spending time with her friends on the lake and reading a good book!

Taylor Charron - Community Clerkship Assistant

Taylor graduated from Ferris State University in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration.

She is from Remus, Michigan where she went to Chippewa Hills High School. She now coaches JV volleyball at her former high school. In her free time, she loves to go hunting with her husband and spend time with family and friends.

Beth Swiercz, OT/L - Rural Community Health Program Coordinator

Beth grew up in the Thumb area and has lived in Saginaw since graduating from Western Michigan University in 1993. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy and has twenty-five years of experience working in health care. Beth has worked in acute care, post-acute rehab, outpatient clinics and home health care. Over the course of her career, she has specialized in the treatment of adult stroke and neurological disorders, hand and wrist injuries and care of the neonate within the NICU. Since 2019, Beth has been working at Saginaw Valley State University in the role of Kinesiology Clinical Coordinator. She has enjoyed this transition from health care to education, while maintaining ties to the health care community through clinical placements.
