Behavioral Health Unit
MyMichigan Health has several Behavioral Health Units; this includes Alma, Alpena, Midland, and Sault Ste. Marie. Each unit provides 24-hour acute inpatient psychiatric care on a locked unit. These units are engineered and designed to offer a lively, attractive, and homelike environment where patients and staff work together as a team while promoting safety.
Types of patients we care for adults (18 and up) with bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dementia/Alzheimer’s, personality disorders and other moderate to severe mental health disorders.
Some services that we offer include psychiatric and nursing evaluations, daily psychiatric management, individual sessions with a psychiatrist, one on one counseling (when available), group therapy sessions throughout the day, recreational and activity therapy, physical and occupational therapy (as needed), and medication management.
Our nurses exhibit great teamwork every day in helping the patients with their diagnosis and teach ways to help cope with their disease. We also have a talented team of therapists who collaborate with the patients and help them develop the coping skills needed for them to function at an elevated level once discharged. Our nurses are trained in dementia care, utilize a Trauma Informed Care approach, and use verbal de-escalation techniques to help keep everyone safe and free from harm on the unit.
We offer daily groups the patients can participate in; the therapists and nurses do a wonderful job of developing a therapeutic rapport with all their patients. Nursing staff is wonderful about encouraging the patients socialize and attend the groups we offer
Emergency Department
At our Emergency Departments, we do not just treat patients — we coordinate life-saving care, support families in crisis, and bring clarity to chaos.
When patients arrive, our work begins immediately. From registration to triage, our team uses standardized protocols to assess and prioritize care, ensuring that the most critical needs are addressed first. While patients wait, our behind-the-scenes collaboration is already in motion — reviewing charts, ordering tests, and planning next steps. It is fast, it is focused, and it is all about providing the right care at the right time.
We practice initiative-taking care. Labs, imaging, and comfort measures often begin before a room or provider is available, so patients get a head start on treatment and our providers have a lot of the data they need the moment they walk in. It is a smart, efficient model that maximizes both patient outcomes and staff workflow.
We work as a dynamic, multidisciplinary team, constantly monitoring progress and making real-time decisions that move patients forward. Even when we are not at the bedside, we are making an impact, every minute, every case.
If you thrive in a setting where clinical skill meets rapid collaboration, where your efforts are always meaningful, and where no two days are the same, this department wants to meet you. Staff builds on their skill, clinical practice, and knowledge through annual skills day training, hospital training modules, and regular educational simulation opportunities that are brought to the department. Unit orientation is conducted through mentoring and preceptorship; inexperienced staff members are provided a hands-on orientation and take an average of 6 to 10 weeks, depending on their previous experience. Inexperienced staff members are provided an orientation packet with weekly goals, checklists, and other helpful information to reference to cover the wide skillset needed to succeed. Each new team member also receives one-on-one skills training sessions during their orientation with the department’s educator to focus on low volume, high-risk procedures.
Imaging Nursing Services
The Imaging Nursing Department plays a vital role in supporting diagnostic and interventional imaging services by providing specialized nursing care tailored to patients undergoing radiologic procedures. Imaging nurses ensure patient safety, comfort, and readiness before, during, and after procedures across modalities such as MRI, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology.
Key responsibilities include:
- Pre-procedure assessment and patient education
- IV access and contrast administration
- Monitoring and support during imaging and invasive procedures
- Post-procedure recovery and discharge care
- Emergency response and sedation support as needed
Imaging nurses collaborate closely with radiologists, technologists, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced, technologically advanced environment. Their expertise is essential in managing patients with complex medical needs, minimizing risks, and improving procedural outcomes.
Intensive Care Units/Progressive Care Units
At MyMichigan Health, our Critical Care Nursing Division embodies excellence, resilience, and collaboration. Our member locations at Alma, Alpena, Midland, Sault Ste. Marie, Saginaw, Standish, Tawas, and West Branch specialize in this advanced medical care. Across each of our member sites, there is a united shared commitment to deliver patient- centered, evidence-based, and compassionate care for individuals facing complex and acute health conditions. In the Critical Care Division, nurses can work in a variety of settings, from specialty Intensive Care Units (ICU) to Progressive Care Units (PCU). Progressive Care Units serve as vital step-down units from the ICU, caring for patients recovering from serious conditions while offering nurses the chance to manage high-acuity cases and bridge the gap between intensive and acute care.
Within our units, nurses use the latest best practices and interprofessional collaboration to ensure optimal outcomes. Some member sites will collaborate during Grand Rounds with the utilization of Tele-ICU that extend specialty services to the communities.
An individualized orientation program allows a tailored approach for each nurse, designed around their prior experience and professional goals. Skilled preceptors provide one-on-one guidance, ensuring a supportive learning environment that builds confidence and competence. Maternal Child Health
MyMichigan Health operates five maternity units across its system. These units are in Alma, Alpena, Midland, Sault St. Marie, and West Branch. Each unit offers care to women and their families during various stages of pregnancy and delivery, which encompass antepartum, labor and delivery, and postpartum. Additionally, we emphasize postoperative care for gynecological services and pediatrics at select locations.
Each maternity unit is supported by a strong unit practice council composed of front-line staff who actively participate in this process.
While we each serve our communities in distinct ways, we collaborate as a unified system to ensure the delivery of best practices that promote safe care for our patients.
Each unit implements a highly effective orientation process tailored to the individual needs of each orientee.
The orientation is structured around the orientee’s prior experience and skills set. It encompasses various phases of care, including triage, labor, delivery (both vaginal and cesarean), couplet care, postpartum care, newborn care, gynecologic care, triage, recovery following cesarean sections, level I nursery care (with level II available at Midland), as well as circulating and scrubbing for cesarean sections at select affiliates, among many other aspects.
The essential certifications required include Basic Life Support, Basic and Intermediate Fetal Monitoring, along with Neonatal Resuscitation. In some affiliates, additional certifications such as pediatric life support may be necessary for those involved in the care of the older pediatric patients.
Beyond these requirements, there are countless opportunities for growth and learning readily available, including Advanced Life Support in Obstetric, Advanced Fetal Monitoring, Resolve Through Sharing, Spinning Babies, and much more.
Medical-Surgical Units
Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg) nursing at MyMichigan Health offers a dynamic and rewarding environment for healthcare professionals who are enthusiastic about delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. As one of the most foundational and diverse areas in nursing, Med-Surg serves as a vital component of the hospital system, caring for a wide range of adult patients across various diagnoses, procedures, and care needs.
Serving twenty-six counties and over one million residents across Michigan, MyMichigan Health’s Med-Surg units support a broad spectrum of specialties, including general medicine, general surgery, specialty surgery, neurological care, and observation-level care. These units are fast-paced and collaborative, offering a robust learning environment for both new and experienced nurses. Whether providing care to post-operative patients, managing complex medical conditions, or supporting short-stay observation patients, our Med-Surg nurses play a critical role in every phase of a patient's recovery and wellness journey.
Each Med-Surg unit within our system maintains a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practice, and continuous professional development. Step-Down Care Opportunities
In addition to our traditional Med-Surg units, MyMichigan Health also offers Step-Down care for patients requiring a higher level of monitoring and clinical intervention than what is typically seen on a general Med-Surg floor. These medical, surgical, and neurological patients are typically cared for within our Med-Surg units by specially trained teams who manage a condensed nurse-to-patient ratio, ensuring the additional attention and vigilance these patients may require.
While these patients are managed within the Med-Surg setting, our teams collaborate with members of the care team that cross all divisions of nursing, allowing for seamless transitions in the event a patient’s condition becomes more acute. This structured and responsive approach ensures continuity of care while upholding our commitment to safety, excellence, and accountability at every level.
Surgical Services
Surgical Services provide high level medical care that is consistent with MyMichigan Health’s Professional Practice Model. We place our patients and families at the center of our care. Together, our staff is composed of Registered Nurses, Surgical Technologists and First Assistants, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, Sterile Processing Technicians, Administrative Assistants, and other ancillary personnel. We work together to provide our patients and families safe care with the best possible outcome. As we provide exceptional care, we do so with safety, efficiency, professionalism, and evidence-based practices in mind.
Unit orientation is conducted through mentoring and preceptorship; inexperienced staff members are provided a guided orientation and take an average of 6 months, depending on their previous experience, to work independently in the circulator role. Taking call is a part of the Operating Room culture. Nurses are fully prepared to take call by the end of orientation by taking “buddy call,” or by pairing up with an experienced nurse to learn the call routine. Through “buddy call” the new nurse can grow their skills and learn the coordination of taking call in the operating room with the safety of their preceptor.
Infusion Centers
Infusions Centers provide the daily care of Oncology & Non-oncology patients requiring chemotherapy, antibiotics, blood products, biologics, and supportive therapy. This includes the long-term care of autoimmune disorders. Infusion Centers are in Alma, Alpena, Clare, Gladwin, Midland, Mount Pleasant, Saginaw, Sault Ste. Marie, Standish, Tawas and West Branch.
Patient assessment, health screenings, and lab review - determined by treatment - are completed by nursing staff. Once all treatment parameters are met and deemed safe to proceed, the treatment is released, and vascular access is established. Our registered nurses offer a wide variety of vascular access skills including central lines, peripherally instated central lines, mid lines, peripheral IVs, and Medi ports).
It is expected that our registered nurses can educate their patients on the medication regimen prescribed and any side effects. Our patients are given tools and resources that help their transition from the Infusion therapy to home.
Universal precautions are observed with every patient. Chemotherapy administration utilizes additional precautions for patient and staff safety.
If an adverse event occurs in the infusion therapy suite, protocol is outlined to assist the patient. All adverse events are documented with appropriate leader follow up, including post event debriefing.
While a wide variety of services are available, services may vary slightly depending on the member location where the infusion center is located.
Ambulatory Surgery Centers
MyMichigan Health has ambulatory surgery centers in Midland, Mount Pleasant, and Saginaw.
Ambulatory surgery, also known as outpatient or same-day surgery, allows patients to undergo surgical procedures and return home on the same day, without the need for an overnight hospital stay. This specialized field prioritizes convenience, efficiency, and a high standard of patient care. The Ambulatory Surgery Team plays a crucial role in ensuring that each patient receives personalized, safe, and compassionate care throughout their surgical journey, from pre-operative preparation to post-operative recovery.

An outpatient clinic is a healthcare facility where patients receive diagnosis, consultation, and treatment without being admitted to the hospital. With the rising demand for cost-effective and accessible healthcare, outpatient clinics play a crucial role in delivering timely and efficient medical services. They bridge the gap between primary care and hospital-based services. Within our health system, we offer a variety of specialty care through our clinics across the state. These clinics house registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants and other medical personnel.
