Non-Traditional Nursing Careers

ADT Nurse

An Admit/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) Nurse is involved in multiple areas of patient care. The role assists with patient admissions, which allows for you to be one of the first staff members patients encounter when they reach the unit. The nurse assists with patient assessments and ensures accurate admission data is added to the patient’s chart to provide useful information for the rest of the patient care team. The nurse helps facilitate patient transfers to and from the unit. Part of the ADT position includes coordination with patient placement, as well as dispersing patient assignments for RNs and Patient Care Technicians.

The patient discharge process requires the ADT Nurse to coordinate with the primary nurse, social work, physicians, pharmacy, etc. to provide education and resources to ensure patients have the tools they need to be successful once they leave the hospital. Being involved in admits, discharges, and transfers to and from the unit allows us to facilitate smooth transitions and patient flow.

Additionally, the nurse will complete follow-up phone calls to patients soon after they are discharged from the hospital. We follow up in an effort to gain insight into how we can improve patient care, discuss how they are doing at home, and take suggestions on areas we could work on to ensure we are providing excellent patient care. These phone calls also give patients another opportunity to ask questions or clarify anything regarding their discharge. The role of an ADT Nurse is a continuum from admission to home.

Analyst RN

The RN analyst role focuses on developing, maintaining, updating, and supporting the electronic medical record (EMR) for clinical users throughout the MyMichigan Health System. 

We work closely with multiple departments and disciplines to ensure the EMR is functioning at an optimal level and provide support to those end users who experience difficulties within the EMR; including making sure documentation meets legal and regulatory requirements. 

We use the clinical knowledge that comes from working at the bedside with the technical knowledge gained from working within the EMR to develop or refine documentation strategies, sometimes developing novel tools within the EMR, so that end users can be efficient, yet complete in the their documentation. We also help bridge the communication gap between the clinical and technical users.

Case Manager

The role of case management is multifaceted and contributes directly and indirectly to many aspects of organizational success including excellent patient care and financial stability. The role of case management can be divided into three distinct areas which are discharge planning, social work, and utilization review.

As discharge planners, we collaborate with the care team to identify most appropriate discharge plan to meet the individualized needs of each patient. In addition, we work with patients and their families to customize and implement the agreed upon discharge plan.  Discharge planning efforts focus on patient safety, length of stay management, and reduction of hospital readmissions. 

In addition to the discharge planning responsibilities, our medical social workers serve as a specialized resource for our patients with underlying social issues or concerns. They work closely with our patients to provide guidance to those who are dealing with mental illness, substance abuse, end of life decision-making, as well as multiple other types of social needs. 

Lastly, the utilization review aspect of case management involves the use of specific criteria and clinical knowledge to assist with the determination of the appropriate level of care for each hospitalized patient. Utilization review is an essential part of the process that has a direct impact on reimbursement from our payers.

Clinical Informatics Nurse

The role of a Clinical Informatics Nurse combines skills in health science, computer science, and information technologies to help clinicians better manage and communicate information, and to retrieve and utilize this data as it applies to patient care and new technology. We help develop and maintain training programs to facilitate the EMR/EHR systems, which include new hire EMR training, upgrades, new projects, new technology, and process improvement for nursing and end users. We work closely with EMR application analysts in workflow design, to define the most efficient and clinically sound workflows while considering best practice, quality and patient safety. Health Care is ever changing, and in this role, we can help ensure this change is done safely and efficiently for our patients and end users, while reducing health care costs.

Dialysis is offered at many of the MyMichigan Health hospitals but Alpena. Alpena is the only location that employs their own nurses to run dialysis for acute and chronic kidney injury patients. Alpena was the first hospital in the United States to use the NxStage machine to treat ESRD patients.This machine allows us to use our own nursing staff to provide dialysis treatments and waive a contract with a dialysis company, such as DaVita. Our machines are mobile and we are able to do treatments anywhere in the hospital. Treatment for a chronic patient takes approximately 4 hours, and an acute treatment can take 8-12 hours. Dialysis nursing is a specialty that involves a long orientation.

Dialysis nurses require excellent assessment and technical skills, and exhibit strong collaborative and therapeutic communication. They must also have a strong sense of leadership, autonomy, and attention to detail.

We monitor and follow-up acute dialysis treatment plans, assist and support doctors and nephrologists in dialysis procedures. We also monitor dialysis accesses, such as AV fistulas, grafts, perm catheters and temporary catheters, and monitor for complications during the procedure. We work in both chronic and critical situations.

The key to the success of our small department is our excellent communication and teamwork.

Infection Prevention Nurse

The role of an Infection Prevention (IP) Nurse combines clinical knowledge, assessment skills, computer skills, and knowledge of how to interpret and enacting regulatory and mandatory report processes. The role shares best practice skills and research to promote employee, staff, and patient safety. The advancement of clinical knowledge in care staff assists in creating the framework for excellent patient outcomes. Infection Prevention Nurses help develop education and strives to help staff function competently and safely when providing patient care. The Infection Prevention role is evolving and has become front and center during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nursing Professional Development Specialist

The role of the Nursing Professional Development Specialist is to collaborate, coordinate, and facilitate evidence-based practice knowledge sharing through professional development activities. Their tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with various disciplines to create and initiate professional development training involving the latest evidence-based practice knowledge
  • Training as nurse planners to write for continuing education contact hours

Nursing Professional Development Specialists function at a corporate level to provide education activities for all MyMichigan Health subsidiaries. This provides a broader focus to recognize opportunities for learning to be tailored to fit the needs of each location.


Quality and patient safety are much alike; our focus is process improvement and striving for the best quality of care for our patients and staff members. The role as patient safety quality nurse is never the same day-to-day. Duties typically consist of reviewing the variance reports (events that may have caused harm to patients) and facilitating Root Cause Analysis (RCA) – to explore the “why” behind an error that occurred and improve the process. The need to develop relationships with staff to build a trust between the quality department and front line staff is essential. In addition, the Quality Nurse will engage clinical and non-clinical staff and work with them as a team on action plans to improve processes. 

Quality and patient safety focus on areas that need to be improved such as patient falls, pressure injuries, infections, hand hygiene, and over all errors that occur. It is important to look at situations from the organizational structure first. We focus on fixing the systemic problem rather than the human error because we are all humans and make mistakes. The premise of quality and safety are to find the holes in our processes and fills those with procedures to prevent them from happening again.

Simulation Specialist RN

MyMichigan Health’s Simulation Center leverages simulation technology as a tool that allows participants to practice, collaborate and facilitate learning in a safe atmosphere to foster quality healthcare at an organizational level and within our communities. 

Simulation Specialist RNs function at a corporate level to provide simulation to all of the subsidiaries and communities served by MyMichigan Health. In this role, the Simulation Specialist RNs routinely interact with numerous clinical disciplines to coordinate and facilitate training in a multidisciplinary environment that supports learning, completing a variety of tasks like:

  • Collaborating with key stakeholders to facilitate and support simulation
  • Creating and developing simulations for multiple disciplines using evidence-based practice guidelines
  • Coordinate and execute a variety of simulation learning events
  • Interpreting and responding to needs assessment data
  • Scheduling, executing and evaluating simulation activities
  • Completing and managing files for nursing continuing education credit

Specialty RN

We have many specialist nurses throughout the health system and each specialist has a different focus, an example of this is our Critical Care Nurse Specialist. As a Critical Care Nurse Specialist my job changes based on the needs that are identified within the critical care areas across the health system. Responsibilities include but are not limited to bedside clinical support, quality data interpretation and reporting, education and providing professional expertise to assist patients, employees, physicians, and leadership. Our current highest priority task is the coordination of Sepsis across the continuum of care. This support is provided through live monitoring of potentially septic patients in an effort to intervene if care is not following best practice guidelines set forth by CMS.

This position advocates education to the care team in the form of updated best practice, committee support and educational programs.  We take an active role in MyMichigan Health’s Code Blue Committee and System Sepsis Committee as a clinical liaison to bridge the gap between leadership and clinical staff. We take on projects such as reigniting the Sepsis Champions to support septic patients in order to provide the best care possible.

Virtual Care Analyst RN

The Virtual Care Department at MyMichigan Health is dedicated to increasing access to quality care throughout our community utilizing many different forms of virtual care. The department is responsible for initiating and maintaining a multitude of virtual care programs resulting in more than 50,000 virtual visits during fiscal year 2020. Some of these programs include TeleStroke/TeleNeuro, pharmacy medication reconciliations, direct to consumer video visits, specialist e-consults, and post-op e-visits.

The Virtual Care Analyst RN role in all these programs varies service to service, but consistently focuses on: organizing and conducting practice observations looking for opportunities to utilize virtual care within a practice/department, collaborating with team members to provide new virtual services to our community, mapping out process flows of how a virtual service will work in a particular area, create training materials for all virtual care services, conduct training for all services, attend education fairs and department skills events, etc. The Virtual Care Analyst RN also assists with troubleshooting technical issues with end users and works with vendors to maintain equipment throughout the health system. Communication, organization, and approachability are imperative to establishing and maintaining good working relationships needed to be successful in this role.

Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse

Wound, Ostomy, Continence (WOC) nurses provide acute and rehabilitative needs for people with disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and/or integumentary system. WOC nurses provide direct care to people with wounds, fistulas, pressure injuries, drains, abdominal stomas, and/or continence/incontinence disorders. The WOC nurse plays a pivotal role in the guidance of optimal patient care as an educator and consultant. We currently have WOC nurses at the Alpena & Midland subsidiaries but are looking to expand our coverage. The autonomy, variety, and being able to work directly with patients and the healthcare providers to develop an individual plan of care for patients with wound, ostomy or incontinence disorders makes this role wonderful.

Outpatient Based Nursing Careers

Center for Women's Health

The Center for Women’s Health (CFWH) imaging department in Midland provides best practice screening and diagnostic imaging. We provide tomographic 3D mammography which provides a three-dimensional picture of the breast which allows Radiologists to find smaller cancers sooner, especially in women with dense breast tissue. Breast ultrasound, Ultrasound biopsy, Stereotactic biopsy, Bone Density and High Risk Assessment are also provided on site with a dedicated team making sure customer care and safety is our main motivation.

There are two certified breast health nurse navigators who assist with planning/educating patients and families about high risk and cancer diagnosis/treatment options. Their main focus is to support and navigate patients through treatment options while working with a team of health care providers.

Gamma Knife

Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a type of radiation therapy used to treat patients with tumors, functional disorders, and vascular conditions of the brain. It is often a safer and more precise alternative to standard brain surgery or other radiation modalities. Gamma Knife patients do not require general anesthesia and experience minimal radiation to other areas of the brain. Gamma Knife is a noninvasive outpatient procedure where the patient can usually go home within hours of arrival and go back to normal activity within 24 hours of the procedure.

The Gamma Knife department consists of a small close-knit team of nurses, physicists, neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, neuro radiologists, and other clinical staff all expertly trained in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. The Gamma Knife nurse training is unique as there are only about 60 Gamma Knife Radiosurgery centers in the United States. Also unique to Gamma Knife nursing is the ability to promote the MyMichigan Medical Center Midland department through speaker engagements, presentations, and other community outreach opportunities.

Gamma Knife functions as part of the Neuroscience Service Line. The Gamma knife nurse reports directly to the working Gamma Knife supervisor and will receive formal orientation while on the job. Orientation will consist of series of educational webinars, competency training, and job shadowing. It will take a Gamma Knife nurse several months to a year to become an expert!

Infusion Center

Daily care for oncologic patients as well as a variety of patients with the need for antibiotics, blood, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid, and gastroenterological  infusions.

Patients are temped, weighed, and vital signs measured in order to ensure the safety of their treatment. A series of questions are asked to assess medication changes, fall risk, and domestic safety. Patients are then asked if they are experiencing any new or worsening symptoms. Any required labs are checked to make sure they are within parameters.  Once it is determined safe to proceed, the treatment is released and IV/Med port/PICC- line access is established.

Unique to most infusion nurses we do new chemotherapy teaching. This is a chance to explain treatment, possible side effects, and things to expect during as well as after treatment. They are also given tools in addition to the medications they have been prescribed in order to help lessen any side effects that they may experience. This is often a very intimidating and fearful time for patients and is an opportunity to form a bond with them.

In the infusion center we use universal precautions with all of our patients.  Chemotherapy medications require full gown and gloves when administering. If chemotherapy is given by IV push goggles are required as well. We do a dual sign off on all chemotherapy drugs as well as some of the biologic medications we administer. This requires two nurses to check the dosage, name, and date of birth for the patient.

In the event of a reaction, once the patient is stabilized, a variance is written on said reaction. We then have a small huddle on the things that went well and what could have been done differently. This is always treated as a way to learn and be able to improve in any way that may be needed. Services may vary slightly depending on the subsidiary the infusion center is located.

MyMichigan Medical Group

MyMichigan Medical Group is the second largest subsidiary providing patients with access to compassionate, quality medical care in the ambulatory setting. The Medical Group employs providers in more than 30 specialties and sub-specialties in over 90 clinics. MPG manages physician practices, Urgent Care clinics and provides specialized services such as billing, coding, and practice management.

The Medical Group serves many populations throughout the MyMichigan Health regions. One of the largest populations we serve is rural health which has critical access needs. Most clinics are open Monday through Friday, with the exception of Urgent Care which is open 7 days per week. Each clinic is staffed based on the needs of the clinic which include type of specialty and number of patients served.

Health care is undergoing radical change and transformation. With a majority of health care moving to the outpatient setting, there is a focus on preventative care. It is critical to be able to provide access to care, attainment of quality patient care outcomes, and maintain costs. The Medical Group nurses play a vital part in patient care, fulfilling roles in primary care, specialty care, urgent care, care transition and management, telehealth, and device nursing. Creating a future that maximizes the evolving health care environment will require sustained forward movement in nursing practice, education, research, and leadership. The Medical Group has a Commitment to Excellence. We practice Relationship Based Care and are in the early stages of developing Unit Practice Councils. MPG also launched its first nurse extern program in 2019.

Pain and Procedures

The Pain and Procedure Unit at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena is located located in Health Resource Center and on 3 South (the third floor of the hospital).

The pain clinic portion of our role is a physician clinic setting in the Health Resource Center. The environment is a fast pace, team approach. We average 25 patients per day in clinic. We are unique in that we can offer our patients a clinic visit with potential same-day intervention to relieve their symptoms. Our patients struggle with completing their activities of daily living in pain. We are able to provide them with comfort. Our doctors provide a positive working environment and treat patients for all different pain related issues.

We have outstanding teamwork in our department from the front desk staff, to the x-ray technician, to the nursing staff and the physician. We work together as a team to create the best work environment possible and provide the best care for our patients.

When it comes to orientation to the pain clinic the staff is diligent to provide the new team member with the tools they need to do their job. They team is respectful and recognizes the uniqueness and unfamiliarity of the care provided to most clinicians. Our nursing team is all ACLS certified and encourage all forms of professional growth.

The procedure portion of the role is located on 3 South. This unit is on the third floor of the Medical Center. In this unit, we support outpatient procedures by assisting with the preparation and recovery of patients undergoing cardiac and radiology procedures.

Joining this team means embarking on a different style of nursing. This is in a hospital setting with an outpatient feel for these procedures.

Unit orientation is a two-step process. One step is learning the details and requirements specific to the pain clinic and the other step is learning the procedure portion of the role that involves prep and recovery of heart and radiology style procedures.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology departments take care of oncology patients on an outpatient basis. We have radiation oncology centers in Alpena, Gratiot, and Midland. We function like a physician office; however, we are an extension of the hospital outpatient services. Nursing is special because it includes history interrogation, education, ordering tests, and acting as the liaison between patient and provider. This allows us the opportunity to really get to know our patients and their families. We see our patients daily for 1 to 8 weeks on average. We have an opportunity to see many of them in follow up for up to five years and beyond. We are constantly keeping track of labs and diagnostics on patients under treatment and post treatment. We work with several wonderful physicians and have greatly varied schedules day to day.

Our nursing staff is involved in policy/procedure creation, provide opinions and advice on EMR changes, and participate in our many fun department activities.

New nurses are shown all areas of the department to know what all staff and job roles do for our patient, ultimately learning how they are all connected. They will shadow a full time nurse for many weeks and learn all the various types of patient visits and their role in that visit. They will learn from the providers as to disease process and what to look for.

Certifications Available: BLS, ACLS, and there is a course through ONS that you can get a certificate for attending but it is not a certification program

Shifts: Typically Monday – Friday 8 hour shifts. Shifts times may depend on the patient schedule.

Riecker Surgery Center

The Riecker Surgery Center is and outpatient endoscopy and surgery center located on the campus of MyMichigan Medical Center Midland. We are a state of the art facility offering 3 operating/procedural rooms as well as a minor procedure room to meet the needs of our pain clinic patients. We are open Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

We care for adult and pediatric patients requiring a variety of outpatient surgery and procedures including:

We encourage staff engagement and growth opportunities. Staff routinely participates in fun team building exercises aimed at fostering the team spirit, maintaining morale, and engagement. Staff is encouraged to participate in the Surgical Services unit practice councils. The councils focus on ensuring we remain up to date on best practice and fosters the implementation of process improvement. Professional development is a primary area of focus and many of our staff are members of professional organizations such as ASPAN, AORN, and SGNA. Specialty certification from these organizations is highly encouraged. In addition, staff has the ability to enhance their skills and knowledge through hands on learning in the simulation lab as well as yearly mock codes, drills, and multiple in-services.

Unit orientation is individualized based on each person’s experience and skills. New staff members are paired with a mentor through the Buddy program to assist in their transition to our team. Depending on the role, orientation may take 1-3 months to complete and will include buddy call if taking call after hours is part of their job description.

OR nurses can obtain their Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) through the Association of PeriOperative Nurses (AORN), and surgical technologists become Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Pre-op and Phase I recovery staff can obtain certification through the American Society or PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) as Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) or Certified Ambulatory PeriAnesthesia Nurse (CAPA).

Gastroenterology staff can obtain Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse credentials through the Society or Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA). RNs and Endoscopy technicians may obtain Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor Certification (CFER) through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

  • 3 Phase I Recovery Bays
  • 3 Operating/procedure Rooms
  • 1 Minor Procedure Room
  • 1 Cystoscopy Room 

Nurse to Pt ratio: Staffing is based upon the unit needs and surgical case load in adherence with AORN and ASPAN guidelines.

  • Pre-op/Phase II recovery 1 to 3
  • Phase I recovery 1 to 1-2
  • OR 1 to 1

PCT to Pt ratio: 1 PCT for the whole center

Shifts: Our staff works a variety of shift from 8-10 hours with flexible start and end times. Gastroenterology trained staff are required to fulfill a call commitment.
