The Alpena Acute Care Unit promotes teamwork and a healthy work environment. It is a place where educational opportunities exist and learning is encouraged. The unit is a fast-paced area with higher acuity patients. There is great collaboration between the nursing staff and Hospitalist group. Nurses hired to this unit will complete the CCU/PCU pathways course and the cardiac monitoring course.

Engagement opportunities for the unit include unit practice councils, system nursing councils, and cardiac monitoring refresher courses. Many of the nurses on this unit are highly involved with the many shared governance opportunities.

At this time, our unit is trialing a 7-week orientation with 6 months on the unit before orientation to the secondary unit. This would include 1 week of general orientation, 4 weeks on day shift, and 2 weeks on night shift. After 6 months working on the unit, orientation to a secondary secondary unit.
