The MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena Maternal Child Health Unit provides care to women throughout the life-span. It is located on the second floor of the hospital next to the Inpatient Rehab Unit.

  • Vaginal deliveries and recovery
  • Cesarean section deliveries and recovery
  • Routine newborn care
  • Level 1 Nursery care
  • Newborn phototherapy
  • Gynecologic surgery recovery

Our unit consists of a tight-knit group of nurses and doctors who provide personalized care to each patient. As most of the nurses are mother’s themselves, they strive to provide women and their families with a safe and meaningful birth experience, as well as support after a hysterectomy or breast surgery.

Our unit offers numerous opportunities for staff to enrich their skills and knowledge as healthcare providers. Opportunities include regularly scheduled safety drills, educational courses and simulations. This ensures that staff is providing top quality, excellent, evidenced based care to every patient.

The average length of orientation on the Women's Health Unit is 12 weeks, but can vary depending on previous level of experience and skill level. New hires are provided with a detailed packet of weekly performance expectations and skill competencies. All new hires are paired with a preceptor to help guide them and make them feel welcome on their new unit.

As recommended by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), the nurse to patient ratios on the Women's Health Unit are as followed:

  • Cervidil/Cytotec Induction 1:2
  • Pitocin Induction 1:1
  • Delivery 2:1
  • Couplet Care 1:3
  • Postpartum Care 1:6
  • Newborn Care 1:6
  • Gynecologic Care 1:6
