More Than 700 Guests Tour New Patient Tower Grand Opening Events
MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena leadership and staff celebrating the opening of the new patient tower.
More than 700 guests attended last week’s open house events celebrating the opening of the new patient tower at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. With the project now complete, patients will continue to stay close to home while receiving the benefits of the latest technology in the best healing environment surrounded by excellent patient care provided from an award-winning health care organization.
“The outpouring of support we received from our community, just with the volume of guests that came through to tour the building alone, was simply overwhelming,” said Chuck Sherwin, president, MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. “MyMichigan Health has grown significantly over the last few years, and one example of this growth is excellent care and experience that our patients and community members will now have with the Alpena patient tower expansion. As the region’s preferred health care provider, ensuring patients remain close to home for their care is critical. The new patient tower enhances our community and region with bigger and better facilities for surgery, patient care and medical services.”
Nearly 600 community members took part in the public open house which included remarks, a ribbon cutting and refreshments, as well as tours of the new building. Tour stops featured the new Hospital Entrance and Family Waiting Room, a Prep and Recovering Room, an Operating Room, the Sterile Processing Department, a LDRP suite, a private patient room, the Critical Care Unit and the connection to the existing building.
The public open house wasn’t the only event marking the Medical Center’s milestone. Special events for donors and providers also were held with remarks, ribbon cutting, tours, live music and refreshments. During the celebrations, leaders of MyMichigan Health Foundation’s Development Council serving Alpena announced the results of the successful fundraising campaign which supported the patient tower. The public and employee campaign surpassed the fundraising goal, raising more than $6.5 million.
“We were delighted to share during the open house events that we have exceeded our fundraising goal for the new patient tower. The excitement and participation in this effort surpassed all of our expectations,” said Ann Diamond, director, MyMichigan Health Foundation. “We offer our sincere gratitude to all that contributed and who became true partners in MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena’s new patient tower. Your gifts will help patients, families, our community and region for years and years to come.”

After final preparations were concluded over the weekend, the patient tower opened on Tuesday, April 26. Mylah Clink was the very first patient in the new patient tower at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena! Both mom and baby are resting comfortably in one of the new, spacious Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum suites. The all-private suites allow rooming in so that babies and parents can stay together during the hospital stay and are equipped with all the technology needed for a safe birth plus amenities to make patients and their support person comfortable.
