Colon and Rectal Surgeon Sarah Diaz, D.O., has joined the comprehensive cancer care team at MyMichigan Health. This team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialized surgeons, interventional radiologists, as well as nurse navigators. Dr. Diaz joins Colon and Rectal Surgeons Kristin Busch, M.D., and George Zainea, M.D., and Physician Assistant Courtney Smith, P.A.-C.

As a colon and rectal surgeon, Dr. Diaz specializes in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of disorders and diseases of the colon and rectum, anal canal and perianal area. She commonly treats conditions such as colon and rectal cancer, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, as well as anal conditions such as hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses and fistulas.

“People are the reason I became a provider,” said Dr. Diaz. “Whether I’m working with a patient newly diagnosed with cancer or performing a colonoscopy, the patients are grateful and amazing to work with.”

According to Dr. Diaz, patients have the best outcomes when they fully understand their disease process and the plan for their treatment. She is conservative in her approaches and tries to offer the most minimally invasive option for her patients.

Dr. Diaz received her medical degree from A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri; completed a residency in general surgery at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township and went on to complete a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

She has extensive training in robotic abdominal and pelvic surgery and has a special interest in colon and rectal cancer as well as pelvic floor surgery for rectal prolapse. Dr. Diaz believes robotic surgery has allowed colorectal surgeons to perform complex procedures using small incisions which means the patient may have less pain, quicker recoveries and fewer post-surgery complications.

Dr. Diaz is an avid equestrian and has competed in the sport of dressage for most of her life with her first “husband” Bomber, a 24-year-old Appaloosa thoroughbred. She enjoys trail running, mountain biking and seeking out adventures. Dr. Diaz currently serves as a flight surgeon in the Air National Guard. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Daniel and their three children.

Dr. Diaz is accepting new patients to her office in the Orchard Building located at 4100 Campus Ridge Drive, in Midland. Those interested in making an appointment may call (989) 839-1795 or toll-free at (866) 494-8934.
