Surgical Oncologist Joins Comprehensive Cancer Care Team
Mohamed Elgamal, M.D.
Surgical Oncologist Mohamed Elgamal, M.D., has joined the comprehensive cancer care team at MyMichigan Health. This team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialized surgeons, as well as breast and lung health nurse navigators.
As an oncology surgeon, Dr. Elgamal is dedicated to delivering the highest-quality surgical care for cancer patients. He is interested in hepatobiliary (liver/gallbladder), stomach and gastrointestinal minimally invasive surgeries including liver resections, pancreatectomy, gastrectomy, colon resections and anti-reflux procedures.
“A cancer diagnosis can derail the patient’s life in many ways,” said Dr. Elgamal. “I don’t want to simply treat the cancer; I want to minimize its impact on the patient.” Dr. Elgamal strives to give patients the longest, as well as best quality of life they can possibly have while minimizing the disruption the treatment requires.
When asked about the most satisfying aspects of his work, Dr. Elgamal shared that he wants to be able to challenge a life-threatening disease process and stop it, turning it into a bump in the road rather than the end of it.
“Each patient is different, so I want to partner with them in achieving their goals from the treatment,” said Dr. Elgamal. “This can only be done through understanding the patient’s point of view and how the disease process is impacting them. I try to walk with the patient through their treatment journey rather than force on them a path to follow.”
“The advancement of minimally invasive surgery and laparoscopy have had a great impact on surgery versus the traditional open surgeries,” added Dr. Elgamal. “Minimally invasive surgeries lessen the impact of large scars, chronic pain and altered anatomy, giving the patients a feeling that their body is still intact.”
A provider since 2012, Dr. Elgamal graduated with honors from the Ain Shams University in Egypt. He completed a surgical residency at Michigan State University, Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies, and an advance gastrointestinal (GI) surgery fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Elgamal is a fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology and American College of Surgeons.
In his spare time, Dr. Elgamal is an avid DIYer and does home improvement projects. He also is very interested in technology and likes to do software development. He and his wife have three children.
