Advisory: MRI Upgrade Preparations Friday, Temporary Noise and Cold Vapor Expected

The community surrounding MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw is advised to anticipate noise and the appearance of cold vapor or fog on Friday, August 8, 2025, as a result of a planned controlled quench. This event is scheduled to take place at approximately 11 a.m. as part of the decommissioning process for the Medical Center’s current MRI system. A new GE 3.0T MRI system will be installed in September 2025

“A quench is a meticulously managed release of helium gas used to cool the MRI’s powerful magnet,” said Mike Erickson, president, MyMichigan Medical Centers Saginaw, Standish, Tawas and Towne Centre. “This procedure will be conducted safely and deliberately by trained professionals to ensure the protection of personnel, equipment, and the environment. MyMichigan Medical Center’s facilities and biomedical teams are collaborating with MRI service specialists to adhere to all necessary safety protocols.”

During the quench, a loud noise and the presence of cold vapor or fog may be noticeable near the Medical Center's Emergency Department roof. This is a standard part of the process and is expected to last for several minutes. The area will be temporarily restricted to essential personnel, and there may be temporary hallway closures around the MRI area during this time.

The quench will not affect any scheduled appointments or services at the Medical Center. Operations will continue as planned, ensuring minimal disruption to patients and staff.
