The Doctors Without Orders event raised $7,200 which will fund a new orthopedic X-ray machine for MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.

MyMichigan Health Foundation Alpena’s Annual Support Committee recently hosted the second annual Doctors Without Orders at JJ’s Steak and Pizza House. The event is a unique dinner-fundraiser where diners tip donations to a waitstaff comprised of local medical providers. This year, $7,200 was raised and will fund a new orthopedic X-ray machine for MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.

The committee thanked all of their volunteers, including the guest waitstaff including MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena physicians Kiel Beltinck, D.O., Robert Currier, D.O., and Shelby Crawford, M.D.; Alcona Health Center’s Nathan Barden, P.A.-C., JB Cook, P.A.-C. ,and Sara Stevens, P.A.-C., as well as Eric Hansen, F.N.P., from Veterans Affairs, and Stephen Sheridan, M.D., of Medical Specialists of Alpena.

“We are grateful to our volunteer providers, support staff and our attendees. Doctors Without Orders is such a fun event and something really special for our community,” said Ann Diamond, development director, MyMichigan Health Foundation. “Jon Benson and his staff at JJ’s Steak and Pizza House truly deserve a special thanks, as they went above and beyond to make dinner and the entire night truly great.”

During the evening, Renee Lamp, B.S.N., cardiac manager, shared how funds raised during last year’s dinner had purchased an interventional cardiology arm board, which secures and stabilizes a patient’s arm during percutaneous coronary interventions. Hunter Nostrant, president, MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena, provided an update on the hospital, including the importance of the new orthopedic X-ray machine that the evening’s donations would go towards.

In addition, Jerry Broad shared his patient testimonial. He described how the cardiovascular team at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena had saved his life the previous year when he experienced an ST-elevation myocardial infarction, the most severe type of heart attack. During his speech, he thanked the doctors and nurses and emphasized how fortunate our community is to have this lifesaving program at our hospital.

Diamond concluded, “Patient testimonials like Jerry are important to helping us understand our patients’ experiences and share with our community how our Medical Center can help them. I’m grateful to Jerry and his wife Marla who attended this event on their wedding anniversary. They chose to share their story on a very special evening because they knew how impactful their words would be.”
