Gift in Memory of H.R. Allott, M.D., Enhances Medical Center Emergency Department
HR Allot, M.D., who established the first 24-hour Emergency Department in Sault Ste. Marie in 1980, is honored by a new addition to the Emergency Department waiting room recognizing his invaluable contributions.
MyMichigan Medical Center Sault is honored to receive a generous gift dedicated to its Emergency Department in memory of H.R. Allott, M.D., a longtime and esteemed physician in the Sault Ste. Marie community.
Given by his surviving wife, Kay S. Allott, this gift is a beautiful stone wall that now lines the Medical Center’s Emergency Department, an area deeply connected to Dr. Allott’s legacy. As the first physician to serve in the Medical Center’s 24-hour Emergency Department, Dr. Allott was a trailblazer in emergency medicine, dedicating his career to providing compassionate care to patients in their most critical moments.
“This gift is a fitting tribute to Dr. Allott’s lifelong commitment to medicine and the Sault community,” said Kevin Kalchik, president, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault. “His legacy of care and service continues to inspire our medical professionals and will now be permanently reflected in this meaningful addition to our community’s Emergency Department.”
Dr. Allott moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1953 and began practicing at the former Soo Polyclinic. He entered private practice in 1960 and continued until 1980 when he founded Chippewa Medical Service, the first corporation of its kind in the Sault. This service provided the area with 24-hour emergency room coverage, with Dr. Allott serving as director until 1990. In addition, he was associated with Whitefish Bay Medical Clinic, Luce County Mental Health, and Eastern Upper Peninsula Mental Health in Sault Ste. Marie until his retirement in 1997.
Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Allott was actively involved in numerous professional and community organizations. He was affiliated with the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Upper Peninsula Health Education Cooperative (as a board member), the American Community of Psychiatry, the American Medical Association, the Michigan State Medical Society, and the Chippewa County Medical Association. His community service extended to the Central Savings Bank Board of Directors and the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, where he also served as a board member.
Dr. Allott, who passed away on June 25, 2001, was widely respected for his medical expertise, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his patients. His impact on the medical community and the countless lives he touched continues to be felt today. As Kay Allott described, “He saw a need and filled it.”
MyMichigan Medical Center Sault extends its deepest gratitude to Kay Allott for this thoughtful tribute, ensuring that Dr. Allott’s contributions to emergency medicine are forever remembered.
