MyMichigan Expands Its Cardiac Electrophysiology Team
Electrophysiologists Michael Dunleavy, M.D., and Lu Chen, M.D.
MyMichigan Health recently expanded its cardiac electrophysiology team with the addition of two highly-skilled specialists, Michael Dunleavy, M.D., and Lu Chen, M.D. This recent expansion underscores MyMichigan’s commitment to providing the region's most comprehensive and advanced care for heart rhythm disorders, offering patients enhanced access to state-of-the-art diagnostic, treatment, and interventional procedures for conditions like atrial fibrillation, ventricular and supraventricular tachycardia, and bradycardia.
Dr. Dunleavy is currently welcoming new patients in Midland where he joins Electrophysiologists Opesanmi Esan, M.D., and William Michael Mellana Jr., M.D.; and Dr. Chen is currently welcoming new patients in Saginaw where she joins Electrophysiologist Asim Yunus, M.D.
As electrophysiologists, Drs. Dunleavy and Chen are highly specialized cardiologists focused on the intricate electrical system of the heart. They manage the full spectrum of heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), from common issues like atrial fibrillation to complex, life-threatening ventricular tachycardias. Their expertise allows them to provide comprehensive treatment, including medication management, implanting pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs), and performing cardiac ablations—minimally-invasive catheter procedures that precisely neutralize the tissue causing the abnormal rhythm to restore a normal heartbeat.
Dr. Dunleavy earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in the Bronx, N.Y. and completed his residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. He further honed his expertise by completing dual fellowships in both cardiology and electrophysiology at the prestigious Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
“I strongly believe in patient autonomy,” says Dr. Dunleavy. “I prioritize getting to know my patients so I can make recommendations based on their individual goals and values. Ultimately, I believe it’s their right to choose the best diagnostic and treatment path from the appropriate options.”
Dr. Chen earned her medical degree at the West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown and completed her residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. Her rigorous training included a fellowship in clinical cardiology with Northwell Health at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She then completed a specialized fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, N.Y.
“It’s important for me to provide the necessary information so my patients can make educated decisions about their own care,” says Dr. Chen. “I aim to address their individual values and needs, whether that means offering reassurance, seeking a better quality of life, or pursuing a longer life. Most of all, I want to treat my patients the way I would want my own family to be treated.”
