Dr. David Rayfield Endowed Scholarship Awarded
Emma Gagnon, SVSU nursing student, received the Dr. David Rayfield Endowed Scholarship from MyMichigan Health Foundation.
Emma Gagnon, a dedicated nursing student at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), has been awarded the Dr. David Rayfield Endowed Scholarship in the amount of $2,300 through the MyMichigan Health Foundation.
Gagnon, who expects to graduate in May 2026 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, has distinguished herself through academic commitment and community involvement. She previously served on the Student Nurses Committee at Alpena Community College, involved with various activities at Bay Athletic Club, and provides tutoring support to fellow nursing students, all while maintaining her focus on compassionate, patient-centered care.
“We are proud to support Emma’s journey as she prepares to become a nurse,” said Denise O’Keefe, executive director, MyMichigan Health Foundation. “She embodies the drive to learn and serve that Dr. Rayfield valued so deeply. This scholarship not only recognizes Emma’s achievements, but also helps continue Dr. Rayfield’s legacy of kindness, service, and belief in the power of education.”
The Dr. David Rayfield Endowed Scholarship was established in 2021 by his family to honor his life and values. A professor of philosophy at SVSU from 1970 to 2005, Dr. Rayfield was known for his compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to supporting others through life’s challenges. He believed deeply in making education more accessible, especially for students in need.
At the end of his life, Dr. Rayfield received hospice care from MyMichigan Home Care nurse Cori Kehr, R.N. Her skilled and heartfelt care for both him and his family members left a lasting impression. In recognition of her compassion and the exceptional care provided by MyMichigan Health, Dr. Rayfield’s family created the endowed scholarship to honor his belief in education and the healing power of human connection.
