Fellowship trained and board-certified colorectal surgeon Matthew Chauviere, M.D., has joined the comprehensive cancer care team at MyMichigan Health. This team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialized surgeons, interventional radiologists, as well as nurse navigators. Dr. Chauviere joins Kristin Busch, M.D., Mohamed Elgamal, M.D., James Fenton, M.D., Melwyn Sequeira, M.D., Erin Harwood, F.N.P.-C., M.S.N., and Kari Malinowski, P.A.-C., on the MyMichigan surgical oncology team, and sees patients at the James T. and Elsa U. Pardee Cancer Wellness Center on the campus of MyMichigan Medical Center Midland.

Dr. Chauviere received his medical degree from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed a general surgery residency at the University of California. He was a surgeon with the U.S. Air Force at the Royal Air Force Lakenheath in England, completed a colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Texas – Houston and, most recently, was a general and colorectal surgeon with Wake Forest University Health Services in North Carolina.

“I chose a career in surgery because I enjoy helping people and value a straightforward and hands-on approach to patient care,” said Dr. Chauviere. “During my military service in the Air Force, I specialized in general surgery where I could work at large military hospitals and manage complex cases.”

Dr. Chauviere was drawn to colorectal surgery because it built on his general surgery training yet allowed him to focus his expertise on a wide range of colorectal conditions. He is trained in robotic surgery for colon and rectal conditions, including cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. He also performs ostomy reversal, colonoscopies and treat conditions such as anorectal fistulas, hemorrhoids and fissures.

“While some patients may be embarrassed by some of their issues, as a colorectal surgeon, I view them as a natural part of life and am committed to helping my patients find effective solutions,” he added.

Dr. Chauviere believes it is important for his patients to understand their condition and be active participants in their care. He will discuss all treatment options with his patients and provide clear information so a joint decision can be made that best supports his patient’s health.

Dr. Chauviere is welcoming new patients to his office at the Pardee Cancer Wellness Center located at 4201 Campus Ridge Drive in Midland.
