Community Support Helps Revitalize Historic War Memorial

The newly restored War Memorial gazebo at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault stands illuminated at night, providing a peaceful space for reflection and remembrance. Supported by community donors, the MyMichigan Health Foundation and the Auxiliary, the revitalized memorial honors veterans' service while preserving an important piece of local history.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, community supporters and the Auxiliary of MyMichigan Medical Center Sault, MyMichigan Health Foundation has completed a fundraising campaign to revitalize the outdoor War Memorial at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault. The project preserves an important piece of local history while creating a renewed space for reflection and remembrance.

The campaign raised more than $15,000 to support the reconstruction of the memorial gazebo and enhancements to the surrounding landscape. The revitalized outdoor space now provides a peaceful and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, staff and community members.

Originally dedicated to soldiers who served during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I, the Medical Center in Sault Ste. Marie has long held a deep connection to military service and sacrifice. The memorial gazebo continues to house the monument honoring those who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War.

The restoration project was designed to preserve the historical significance of the memorial while enhancing its beauty and accessibility for future generations.

“This memorial represents far more than a physical structure—it is a tribute to the courage, sacrifice and service of the men and women who defended our country,” said Kevin Kalchik, president, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault. “We are deeply grateful for all those who helped make this project possible. Their generosity ensures this sacred space will continue to honor veterans and provide comfort and reflection for our community.”

The renewed memorial features a reconstructed gazebo and refreshed landscaping that creates a respectful setting for remembrance, healing and quiet reflection.
