MyMichigan Medical Center Sault Recognized for Lowest NTSV Cesarean Birth Rate in Michigan
MyMichigan Medical Center Sault was recognized by the Michigan Obstetric Initiative (OBI) during its Spring 2026 semiannual meeting for achieving the lowest rate of Nulliparous, Term, Singleton, Vertex (NTSV) cesarean births in 2025 at 12.4 percent. The state average in 2025 was 27.2 percent.
NTSV cesarean births are cesarean deliveries among first-time mothers carrying a single, full-term baby in a head-down position. Because these pregnancies are generally considered low risk, reducing unnecessary cesarean deliveries is an important indicator of high-quality maternity care and helps lower the risk of complications for both mothers and babies.
The Michigan OBI is a statewide Collaborative Quality Initiative that included 65 hospital partners in 2025. They work together to improve childbirth outcomes and care across Michigan. The participating hospitals focus on safely averting NTSV cesarean births and improving outcomes for mothers and babies throughout the state.
“While cesarean deliveries can be lifesaving and medically necessary in some situations, avoiding unnecessary C-sections can reduce the risk of infection, shorten recovery times and decrease the likelihood of complications in future pregnancies,” said Sarah Amo, M.D., obstetrician and gynecologist, and physician champion for OBI at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault.
