Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood and/or platelets. Every day, about 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed across our country and approximately 16 million blood components are transfused every single year.
These numbers may seem overwhelming, but the reality is, donating blood just once can save up to three lives. Your donation could help someone injured in an accident, undergoing chemotherapy or who has a blood disease, just to name a few.
In partnership with Versiti Blood Center of Michigan, MyMichigan Health holds Community Blood Drives at many of their facilities. Donating blood takes about an hour. Anyone age 17 or older in good health who meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to give. Parental consent is required for donors age 16 to give. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes their birth date. For more information visit Versiti's FAQ page.
Blood drives at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault are coordinated by the UP Regional Blood Center (UPRBC), the sole provider of blood products to hospitals across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Donations made locally stay in the UP, helping ensure patients receive the care they need—often making a lifesaving difference for up to three individuals with just one donation.
