Clinical Trials at MyMichigan Health

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a research study that involves people, just like you.

By joining a trial, you may get access to new and advanced treatments that are not widely available yet. These treatments are designed to be as good—or better—than the standard care.

At MyMichigan, clinical trials are one of the ways we make sure you and your doctors have access to the latest options in the middle of Michigan. Many of our trials take place at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland, so you can get leading-edge care close to home.

Risks and Benefits

Joining a clinical trail has both benefits and risks

Benefits may include:

  • You could be among the first to benefit if the new treatment works.

  • You’ll receive excellent care and extra attention during the study.

  • You’ll know that your participation may help others in the future.

Risks may include:

  • The new treatment may not work as hoped.

  • You may have side effects that are unknown or unexpected.

In many trials, patients are randomly placed in one of two groups:

  • Standard treatment group – you receive the best care currently available.

  • New treatment group – you receive the treatment being studied.

Random placement ensures the study results are accurate and fair.

How to Participate in a Clinical Trial

If you’re interested in a clinical trial, contact our Clinical Research Trial office at (989) 631-2469 and request an information form. Once submitted, our clinical trials nurse will contact you to see if you qualify.

To find out if you’re eligible, the nurse may:

  • Ask you for details about your health and medical history.

  • Contact your doctor to gather more information.

If you qualify and decide to join:

  • You’ll be assigned to a MyMichigan doctor who is leading the study.

  • That doctor will manage your care throughout the trial.

  • Some of your information will be shared with other researchers to help fight cancer and improve care for future patients.
