Get Your Mammogram

The Gold Standard in Early Breast Cancer Detection

Mammography is a low-dose X-ray of the breast and the most effective tool available for detecting breast cancer early—when it’s most treatable. In fact, mammograms detect 90–95% of breast cancers and are the only screening method proven to reduce breast cancer mortality.

When combined with monthly breast self-exams and annual clinical breast exams, mammograms improve the chances of finding cancer early—leading to more treatment options, less invasive surgery, and better outcomes.

Who Should get a Screening Mammogram?

  • 1 in 6 breast cancers occurs in women in their 40s
  • Breast cancer mortality has decreased by nearly 40% since 1990, thanks in large part to mammography
  • Annual mammograms starting at age 40 reduce mortality by about 30%

The American Cancer Society recommends:

  • Age 20+: Perform monthly breast self-exams
  • Ages 20–40: Clinical breast exam every 3 years
  • Age 40+: Annual clinical breast exams and yearly mammograms

Common Concerns About Mammograms

I am worried mammograms are painful

Compression may feel uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. It helps spread breast tissue for a clearer image, lowers radiation exposure, and prevents motion blur.

I am concerned about the cost

Most insurance plans cover screening mammograms. MyMichigan Health also offers financial support programs. Call our Breast Health Coordinator at (989) 837-9054 or email breast.health@mymichigan.org for assistance.

What if they find something?

Finding cancer early gives you the best chance for effective treatment. Mammography is the only screening tool proven to save lives.

I don't have a family history

Surprisingly, 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history. That’s why regular screenings are vital for everyone.

I am worried about the radiation exposure

A mammogram uses a very low dose of radiation—about the same as a round-trip flight from New York to California.

I don't have time

A typical mammogram takes 30 minutes or less. With flexible scheduling and easy online booking through MyChart, it's easier than ever to make time for your health.

I have dense breasts—do I still need a mammogram?

Yes. Mammograms can still detect many cancers, even in dense tissue. They remain the most effective screening tool for all breast types..

What is 3D mammography?

Also known as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), 3D mammography captures layered images of the breast from multiple angles, making it easier to spot abnormalities.

Do I need a mammogram every year?

Yes. Even if your last mammogram was normal, new cancers can develop within a year. Skipping annual mammograms can miss up to 30% of cancers, even in women over 50.

What to Expect at Your Mammogram

Taking care of your breast health is vital—and a mammogram is one of the most important steps. To ease any anxiety, MyMichigan Health created a video to walk you through the entire process—from scheduling to what happens during your exam.

We recommend all women age 40 and older receive an annual mammogram. If you have a higher risk or family history of breast cancer, speak with your primary care provider about a personalized screening plan.
