High Risk Breast Clinic
Personalized Breast Cancer Prevention and Early Detection
The High Risk Breast Clinic at MyMichigan Health was developed in partnership with Michigan Medicine and our comprehensive breast health team. This collaborative team includes breast health nurses, diagnostic radiologists, breast cancer nurse navigators, breast surgeons, oncologists, and reconstructive surgeons—all working together to provide advanced, personalized care for individuals at increased risk of breast cancer.
Our Mission: Early Detection & Risk Reduction
The clinic is designed to identify women at elevated risk and to either reduce that risk or detect breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage.
To assist with early identification, MyMichigan Health offers a free breast cancer risk assessment to all women under age 80 during their annual mammogram. This assessment includes a series of simple questions about personal and family history. Your answers are analyzed using advanced software and five clinically recognized risk models.
If the results indicate a high lifetime risk or suggest a possible genetic mutation, you may be referred for further evaluation with our breast health specialist at the High Risk Breast Clinic.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
During your visit, our specialist will:
- Review your personalized risk assessment
- Perform a clinical breast exam
- Order additional screening tests if needed
- Provide education about your individual risk
- Develop a personalized surveillance or prevention plan
- Discuss lifestyle and medical risk-reduction strategies
- Coordinate any necessary referrals to genetic counselors or other specialists
Who Should Consider the High Risk Clinic?
- You may benefit from a referral if you:
- Have a personal or family history of breast cancer
- Have a known or suspected genetic mutation (e.g., BRCA1 or BRCA2)
- Were treated with radiation therapy to the chest before age 30
- Have dense breast tissue
- Are diagnosed with certain reproductive or hormonal risk factors
Even if you have no family history, it’s important to note that 75% of breast cancers occur in women not considered high risk. That’s why annual screening mammograms starting at age 40 are recommended for all women, and earlier for those with risk factors.
