Acoustic Neuroma

What is Acoustic Neuroma?

Acoustic neuroma (also called vestibular schwannoma) is a non-cancerous tumor that grows on the nerve that connects your brain to your inner ear. This nerve helps with hearing and balance, so the tumor can cause problems with both.

How We Diagnose Acoustic Neuroma's

MyMichigan Health uses advanced technology to find and diagnose acoustic neuroma. If your doctor thinks you may have this condition, they may refer you to one of our board-certified neurosurgeons.

To help diagnose the tumor, your doctor may use::

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) – This test uses magnets to create clear pictures of the inside of your head. It can see through the bones of the skull to spot the tumor.
  • CT (Computerized Tomography) – Also called a CAT scan, this advanced x-ray shows detailed images of your brain, bones, and blood vessels.

Treatment Options

Treatment for an acoustic neuroma depends on a few things, like how big the tumor is, where it’s located, your age, and your overall health. If you are diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, MyMichigan Health offers expert care and advanced treatment options, including:

  • Surgery – If the tumor is large or pressing on the brain, surgery may be needed. A neurosurgeon will make a small opening in your skull to remove the tumor. This surgery is called a craniotomy and is done using special tools and microscopes to be as safe and precise as possible.
