Spine Surgery
If your doctor suggests surgery for your back or neck issue, the team at MyMichigan Health team can assist you. Our board-certified neurosurgeons can do many kinds of spine surgery, ranging from simple to complex. During your first visit, we will examine your condition. After that we will work together to create a treatment plan for you.
Types of Spine Surgery at MyMichigan Health
Your neurosurgeon will decide if surgery is the best option for you. This depends on your symptoms, medical history, and other factors. Here are some of the common spine surgeries we offer:
- Discectomy (or microdiscectomy) - This surgery removes part or all of a damaged disc. It helps relieve pressure on a nerve caused by a herniated disc. A microdiscectomy involves a small cut in the back. It removes the part of the disc that causes issues.
- Laminectomy (or hemilaminectomy) - In this surgery, the doctor removes a bone piece called the lamina from the spine. This helps relieve pressure on nerves and is also called spinal decompression. A hemilaminectomy removes just a small part of the lamina.
- Spinal fusion - This procedure joins two or more bones, or vertebrae, so they heal as one. It helps make the spine more stable and reduces pain. Surgeons may use bone grafts or special tools to do this. There are different ways to perform spinal fusion depending on your condition.
Note: These are a few examples. Your surgeon will decide what kind of surgery is best for you.
