Feeling Fortunate for Excellent Orthopedic Care Close to Home

Jim McNeil moved back to his hometown of Alpena in 2014. A retired detective sergeant, golfer and die-hard Michigan football fan, he attempted all conservative measures to treat the pain in his left arm and shoulder. For Jim, the idea of undergoing surgery was daunting, and he didn’t really want to slow down for it. So, for a few years he tried to manage his pain with physical therapy and cortisone injections. Over time, however, those treatments began to fail, and his Primary Care Provider Rodney Szymanski, P.A.-C., at MyMichigan Family Medicine, referred him to Orthopedic Surgeon Kiel Beltinck, D.O.

“I’ll be honest, I was concerned about post-surgical pain and how long it would take me to recover,” said Jim. “I didn’t want to do it during golf or football season. Then it was the holidays. I just didn’t think there could be a right time for it. Having gone through it now so successfully, I wish I’d done it much sooner.”

At his surgical consultation, Dr. Beltinck explained in detail how and why a shoulder replacement would help treat his osteoarthritis and restore his range of motion. After their discussion, together they decided to move forward with it.

“Dr. Beltinck is a very good doctor,” Jim stated. “He took time with me and explained everything. He has a terrific bedside manner. In fact, the entire team was fantastic from the staff at check in and X-ray to the clinical staff. They were all very caring and polite.”

Dr. Beltinck performed a total shoulder replacement on Jim’s left side and corrected a biceps tendon tear at the shoulder. Jim stated that he was amazed at how little pain he experienced after surgery. He completed physical therapy, careful to follow all directions and attended all follow-up appointments to ensure a return to full range of motion.

“Before surgery, I couldn’t extend my arm out in front of me without pain,” he said. Now, I’m back to swinging the golf clubs. I’m very pleased with my results. We’re very fortunate to have access to excellent care right here in Alpena.” Jim was able to enjoy an active summer and is looking forward to cheering on his Wolverines at the Big House this fall.
