Biography
Amanda Alvelo-Malina, M.D., is a board-certified gynecologist who sees patients at the Center for Women’s Health on the campus of MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland.
Philosophy of Care
Dr. Alvelo-Malina believes that making women feel comfortable is the first step to establishing a good relationship with her patients.
“I enjoy seeing women throughout the course of their life from preconception through menopause and the ability to care for a variety of patients throughout all stages of life,” Dr. Alvelo-Malina said.
“I want to develop the kind of relationship where my patients feel comfortable asking questions and discussing sensitive topics as we collaborate together in their care. I like them to be involved in decisions, and I take time to educate them about risks and benefits so they are fully involved in their care plan.”
Dr. Alvelo-Malina was drawn to her specialty after completing an area of concentration in medical school revolving around women’s health. “Those experiences in osteopenia education and in following local pregnant adolescents during their prenatal care and delivery helped draw me into obstetrics and gynecology.”
With more than 14 years of experience, her passion for gynecology shows in the rapport she has with her patients. Dr. Alvelo-Malina is excited by the growth and development in several areas of gynecology, including new minimally-invasive and non-invasive treatments for patients with abnormal bleeding and menstrual disorders as well as the development of the HPV vaccine. Minimally invasive surgeries offer patients shorter recovery time, minimal pain and earlier return to normal activities. The vaccine will greatly reduce cervical, anal, vulvar, vaginal and throat cancers.
In her free time, Dr. Alvelo-Malina enjoys spending time with her husband Thoracic Surgeon Miguel Alvelo-Rivera, M.D., and two children who are active in hockey and competitive figure skating. She also likes yoga, crafts, and ice skating.
