Biography
Michael Lauer, M.D., is an interventional cardiologist with MidMichigan Health and is a member of the comprehensive heart and vascular team at MidMichigan Health. This team includes cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, as well as vascular, thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons.
Dr. Lauer brings over 15 years of cardiology experience to his patients, offering expertise in advanced cardiac testing and treatment. As an interventional cardiologist, he works with patients who have cardiac-related conditions such as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease, valvular and structural heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defects and other complex cardiac conditions.
He is the director of MidMichigan’s Regional STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) Program, a nationally recognized team of emergency medical personnel, Emergency Department staff, cardiologists and support staff dedicated to optimizing the rapid transfer and treatment of patients suffering from STEMI heart attacks.
Philosophy of Care
Dr. Lauer was drawn to the specialty of cardiology as a result of his fascination with the overall engineering and architecture of the heart. With his background in mechanical engineering, he was always amazed by the mechanics of the heart and fascinated by how it works.
“I enjoy spending time with my patients, getting to know them and helping them understand their heart condition,” Dr. Lauer said. “As a cardiologist, part of my role is to serve as a health care educator and advisor to my patients.”
Special Interests and Procedures
Dr. Lauer’s advanced training enables him to offer both cardiology and interventional cardiology services. Cardiology tests and procedures he provides include exercise stress testing, echocardiography, diagnostic cardiac catheterization and intravascular ultrasound. Dr. Lauer also provides a wide variety of interventional procedures to treat blockages in the heart. These include angioplasty, atherectomy, thrombectomy, stent implantation and the insertion/management of intra-aortic balloon pumps.
Dr. Lauer and his wife have five children and four grandchildren. In his free time, he and his wife love spending time with their grandchildren. They also enjoy spending time biking, hiking, gardening and on occasion, sailing.
