Biography
Mark Nootens, M.D., is a fellowship-trained cardiologist with MyMichigan Health’s comprehensive heart and vascular team. This experienced team specializes in using a multidisciplinary approach to managing cardiovascular disease and includes cardiologists, electrophysiologists, heart failure and structural heart specialists, as well as vascular and cardiovascular surgeons.
Dr. Nootens works with patients who have a variety of cardiac-related conditions such as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease, valvular and structural heart disease, congenital heart defects and other complex cardiac conditions. “I chose to go into the field of cardiology because I was very interested in the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system and the more acute aspects of many heart conditions,” he added.
Philosophy of Care
According to Dr. Nootens, he believes in treating each patient as a unique person and always works hard to help them achieve their health care goals. “I try to really listen to my patients in order to get to know them well and engage them in their treatment plan,” he said. “I work hard to gain my patients trust so that we can work together as a team and achieve the best possible clinical outcomes.” Dr Nootens feels that the most satisfying aspect of his work is “the gratitude that patients and their families show when they feel that they have received the highest quality patient care.”
Special Interests and Procedures
Dr. Nootens enjoys all aspects of diagnostic testing including stress tests, echocardiography, cardiac monitoring and angiography. “My primary focus is on aggressive risk factor modification for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events and to maximize the patient’s quality of life,” he added. “To me, the most exciting medical development in the field of cardiovascular care is the ability to treat more patient diseases with non-surgical therapies like TAVR and coronary/peripheral interventions. There are also some newer medications available that have greatly improved the management of heart failure.”
In his free-time, Dr. Nootens and his wife Natalie, enjoy hiking, backpacking and biking. He goes to the fitness center regularly and tries to “practice what he preaches.” Dr. Nootens and his wife have three grown adult sons.
