Biography
Amy Nowak, F.N.P.-C., M.S.N., is a certified nurse practitioner specializing in cardiology. She is currently welcoming new patients in Alpena and is a member of MyMichigan Health’s comprehensive heart and vascular team. This team includes cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, heart failure and structural heart specialists, as well as vascular and cardiovascular surgeons.
“I chose to pursue a career in medicine because of my long-standing passion for helping others improve their health and overall quality of life,” said Amy. “My background as a registered nurse on a cardiac unit provided a strong foundation in caring for patients with both acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions. During this time, I saw firsthand how evidence-based interventions combined with compassionate care could significantly influence patient outcomes, which I found deeply rewarding.”
Philosophy of Care
Amy believes that building meaningful, long-term relationships with patients and their families is essential. According to her, effective health care is grounded in evidence-based practices, but it must also be tailored to the patient’s individual needs. “Every patient is unique, so it’s crucial to take the time to understand their personal circumstances, preferences, and health goals in order to develop a care plan that works best for them,” she said. “Patient education plays a central role in my approach. I’m committed to helping patients understand their condition and treatment options, so they feel empowered to make informed decisions about their health.”
Special Interests and Procedures
According to Amy, transitioning from her role as a family nurse practitioner in a primary care setting has allowed her to continue to manage a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases while also focusing on prevention through patient education and lifestyle modification. These experiences further deepened her interest in cardiology and reinforced her desire to continue expanding her knowledge in cardiac care. “I am particularly motivated by the opportunity to reduce the burden of heart disease through prevention, early detection and patient-centered care,” she added. “My current clinical interests include the management of hypertension and congestive heart failure, with a particular emphasis on lifestyle modification, risk factor reduction, and patient education. I value a comprehensive, preventive approach and enjoy working closely with patients to optimize long-term cardiovascular health.”
