Biography

Meic Schmidt, M.D., M.B.A., is board-certified with fellowship training in spinal conditions and diseases, including tumors affecting the spinal cord. Specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery and spinal tumor surgery, Dr. Schmidt provides treatment for patients at MyMichigan Medical Center in Saginaw.

Philosophy of Care

With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Schmidt offers a wealth of knowledge and experience in caring for individuals with spine tumors and injuries to the spine and spinal cord, and complex degenerative spine disease.

“I truly enjoy working with patients and being able to help improve their symptoms and quality of life,” said Dr. Schmidt. “My primary clinical focus is on the management of patients with tumors and injuries to the spine and spinal cord.”

With experience in minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques, Dr. Schmidt also treats complex patients with degenerative spine disease including cervical myelopathy and patients requiring microsurgery for spinal cord decompression in the neck and back. He is well-known for his role in establishing a new thoracoscopic spine surgery technique for tumors and fractures.

“When it comes to spine surgery, the most important thing is determining which patient needs surgery, and what procedure will serve the patient best,” he said.

Born in Germany, Dr. Schmidt completed medical school and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He completed fellowships in neuro-oncology and spinal surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and has served at medical institutions from Maine to New York, New Mexico to Utah and California.

Special Interests and Procedures

In addition to his medical expertise related to the spine, Dr. Schmidt has a passion for research including investigating the benefits of minimally invasive spinal surgery for metastatic tumors and development of health outcomes and quality of care measures. He has been published in numerous scientific periodicals, medical books and peer reviewed journals. See education and location on reverse side >
