First Year (PGY 1)

No overnight call during PGY 1 year!

PGY 1 call includes one ten-hour Saturday shift in the Emergency Department per month on average for the first six months.

Second Year (PGY 2) and Third Year (PGY3)

Residents are assigned one call shift per month on average for our Family Medicine Hospital Service.

Weekly half day didactics occur every Wednesday in addition to one Friday afternoon per month. These didactics cover the breadth of family medicine practice and also include: Evidenced Based Medicine, Behavior Health, Procedural Training, Lifestyle Medicine, OB & Pediatrics, and Wound Care.

MyMichigan Health also offers a variety of educational activities that residents are encouraged to attend. These include: EKG Grand Rounds, Cancer Conference, Leadership Safety Rounds, CCU Teaching Rounds and many other specialty-specific educational opportunities.

At Family Practice Center Alma, we have the privilege of serving a large and diverse patient population, many of which, unfortunately - have been hit hard with the combined effects increasing obesity prevalence, smoking and limited health care access. All of which has led to poor health outcomes and many lost opportunities for a healthier, gratifying life. By implementing the Lifestyle Medicine residency Curriculum (LMRC) track at our site, we will be able to not just patch up chronic illnesses with medications, but treat them from the roots and pave a sustainable path to a powerful, knowledgeable and enlightened community. This also provides our residents with the opportunity of becoming dual board certified upon graduation – through the added certification of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. At Alma Family Medicine Residency, our goal is to dedicate more time educating future physicians on the importance of lifestyle medicine, not only for their patients' health, but also their own.

Procedural training is taught through longitudinal procedural training curriculum. Which includes lectures, workshops, and “procedure day” in clinic where resident works one on one with faculty.

Spanning a year, our ultrasound program offers a series of dedicated monthly ultrasound training sessions, commencing from the first year of residency. These immersive sessions blend lectures with hands-on scanning, and one-on-one supervision. Training includes both using ultrasound probes (Butterfly IQ) as well as traditional ultrasound machines. There is access to Core Ultrasound lectures as well as a 3000 ultrasound image question bank for additional practice if desired. In addition, our program offers an ultrasound track in the second or third year of training, with the ability to focus on areas of ultrasound interest. There is also an optional ultrasound certificate awarded by the program to those that have completed the required number of scans.

Each resident participates in 2 original research projects during their residency, at least one of which is a quality improvement project. Residents are partnered with faculty to foster their growth in research and are provided a timeline to assist them on staying on track to complete the research requirements by the end of their second year. We partner with Michigan State University Center for Statistical Training and Consulting who support those projects that may find statistical consultation beneficial. Our projects are presented each year at a variety of conferences, including our annual program research day.

Our program participates in the GME Alliance through Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Residents do both virtual and in-person training once a month for approximately nine months per year. The program covers a variety of topics including: ALSO Course, APLS Course, Colposcopy Course, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Dermatological Procedures, Chronic Diseases and Practice Management.
