About

Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

MyMichigan Medical Center Midland

The Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland is made for middle and high school students who need extra support with their mental health. The program helps teens cope with life, feel better, and function more successfully at home, school, and in the community. It meets three evenings a week in a safe, comfortable, and welcoming space.

Who It's For

The IOP is for teens who:

  • Have a mental health diagnosis
  • Need more help than weekly therapy can give
  • Do not need to stay overnight in a hospital

What the Program Helps With

The IOP supports teens with:
  • Depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem
  • Problems with medication or side effects
  • Feeling tense, angry, or unable to relax
  • Trouble communicating or dealing with stress
  • Feeling confused or unable to make good decisions

Why the IOP Can Help

  • Teens and their families help set treatment goals
  • Privacy is respected at all times
  • Therapists, nurses, and psychiatrists are experienced and licensed
  • Includes group therapy, one-on-one sessions, and family therapy
  • Medication help is available from doctors and nurses
  • The program environment is structured, supportive, and caring

What We Expect From Participants

Teens in the program are expected to:

  • Come to every session on time (only emergencies excuse absences)
  • Join and take part in all activities
  • Finish take-home assignments
  • Keep phones and smartwatches in lockers during the program
  • Not use drugs or alcohol while enrolled
  • Stay in program areas during each session
  • Treat staff and other participants with respect

Mental Health Basics

Mental health conditions are real medical issues—just like heart disease or diabetes. They can happen to anyone and may be caused by things like biology, life stress, or environment.

Some signs of mental health problems include:

  • Changes in sleep, eating, or energy
  • Feeling sad, anxious, or angry often
  • Mood swings or acting out
  • Thoughts of self-harm or harming others
  • Pulling away from friends or family

Good news: mental health conditions can be treated. Talking with a therapist and, in some cases, using medication can help people manage symptoms and feel better.
