Tricia Hozeska, 53, was happy to learn that annual breast screenings have been made easier and more convenient by MyMichigan Health. As a resident of Frankenmuth, Hozeska was driving to Saginaw for her mammograms. When she heard that MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw’s Mobile Mammogram Unit would be regularly available in her neck of the woods, she was thrilled. It saved her time, travel and hassle while meeting her schedule for this service she has always relied upon.

Hozeska was at MyMichigan Medical Center Towne Centre in Saginaw for an unrelated appointment when she noticed a flyer for the Mobile Mammogram Unit. She asked if she could take a few to share. Once she completed her appointment in the Mobile Unit, she began spreading the word with colleagues, friends and even patients who visited her at the medical supply shop where she works.

“I have always maintained annual mammograms because I know that early detection is the best way to have a positive outcome if something is going on,” Hozeska shared. “Now that I can get checked right here in Frankenmuth, it’s fantastic. It was so simple. They have all the same equipment on the bus, and it was also cozy and private.”

The 45-foot breast screening unit not only visits Frankenmuth, but also Birch Run, Chesaning and Vassar on a regular schedule. The bus is equipped with 3D mammography, private changing rooms and a comfortable waiting area.

Although Hozeska was able to make traveling for priority appointments like mammograms work, not all women are. MyMichigan’s Mobile Mammogram Unit brings care even closer to home, allowing more women in the area a convenient screening opportunity.

“We know that more frequent screenings help with early detection and a chance to formulate treatment plans quickly when needed,” said Christopher Garces, M.D., board certified surgeon specializing in breast surgery at MyMichigan Health. “In the rural parts of our services areas, the mobile option becomes a real impact-maker. By bringing screenings directly into the community, we increase access, enable early detection and improve health outcomes, particularly for women who might otherwise be unable to get screened.”

Hozeska plans to continue using the mobile mammogram screening option and encourages others to do so when it makes good sense for their circumstances. “It is quick, convenient, local and professional,” Hozeska said. “Wins all around.”
