Mio Man Transforms Life with Bariatric Surgery

For Mio resident Jim Labo, 50, staying active was never the problem. He was a regular at the gym, an avid outdoorsman, and a passionate golfer. But despite his efforts, he struggled with weight for most of his life. As he approached his fiftieth birthday, Labo began researching surgical options for weight loss.

That’s when MyMichigan Health’s bariatric surgery program was highly recommended to him as one of the best in Michigan. He scheduled a consultation with Bariatric Surgeon Jeffrey Bonacci, M.D. Since Dr. Bonacci performed gastric sleeve surgery on Lago, he has lost 162 pounds and feels amazing. “My only regret is not doing it sooner,” Labo shared.

A sleeve gastrectomy permanently removes about 85–90% of the stomach using staples, leaving behind a narrow, sleeve-shaped pouch. While the stomach’s basic function remains, its capacity is drastically reduced, helping patients feel full faster and eat less.

From his first consultation to surgery day, the process took only about 30 days. Labo worked closely with Angela Munro, R.N., B.S.N., MyMichigan’s bariatric program nurse coordinator. Preparation included an EKG, a nutrition class, a psychological evaluation and dietary counseling with Kelsey Brown, R.D. “Everyone was helpful and straightforward,” said Labo. “Angela also had me lose 20 pounds before surgery.”

Labo was highly motivated and prepared well. Dr. Bonacci performed the surgery at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma, where Labo’s recovery went so smoothly he was able to return home the same day. Staff commended him for walking shortly after surgery—a key factor in recovery. At every follow-up appointment, he exceeded expectations in weight loss and lifestyle adjustments.

“My life looks totally different than it did before, and I couldn’t be happier,” Labo shared. “It’s not just about the weight. I feel so much better mentally.”

Today, Labo eats several small meals each day, focusing on protein while limiting carbohydrates and alcohol. His energy levels are higher than ever before. He lifts weights four times a week, tracks tens of thousands of steps at work, and enjoys playing golf whenever possible.

“Finding MyMichigan’s bariatric program has been a godsend,” Labo said. “Getting this surgery is the best choice I ever made. I believe I’ve added 20 years to my life, and I’m grateful.”
